Boardworks Surf Announces New Rescue Division

Encinitas, CA (January 31, 2012) Mike Fox owner of Boardworks and former Hawaiian Lifeguard, has teamed up with California Lifeguard Steve Reuter, rescue equipment designer, to create a new vision for water rescue products. Together they have developed a line of Rescue Boards that are stronger, safer and more innovative than any other product on the market.

This is a natural turn of events, noted Fox. “Bringing Steve into the equation at Boardworks makes sense. Boardworks has an excellent track record as an innovative products company. Steve has an excellent record as a designer of authentic rescue products. Very stoked about the opportunity.”

Reuter has been a professional Lifeguard since 1976 and continues to work as a Rescue Boat Captain in Southern California. Twice awarded the Medal of Valor for bravery, Reuter has saved countless lives over his long career. Steve also has a love of the ocean; his passions are surfing, scuba diving and sailing. He has been a commercial diver, surf instructor and martial artist as well. Using his lifeguard knowledge and experience, Steve designed the number one rescue board in the country in 1999. Now joining the team at Boardworks, he continues to design and improve water rescue products for emergency response agencies across the country.

Fox was the youngest Lifeguard for the City and County of Honolulu, an avid waterman who loves surfing, paddling and competitive swimming. Mike has always maintained his love for the water and kept a close relationship with his Hawaiian Lifeguard roots. Mike a strong competitor, took two first place finishes in the 2010 United States Lifesaving Association National Championships in Huntington Beach for his division. In May of 2010, Fox purchased Boardworks. As Mike says, “its been game on ever since. “

Boardworks is building three types of craft that water rescue professionals will use to save lives. These products can be used in a wide variety of aquatic emergencies including swift water rescue, flood situations and ocean rescues. The product launch will be at the Firehouse World in San Diego Feb 21 and continue on at the CSLSA, USLA shows. “We are looking forward to showing our collection of inflatable boards and specialty items, including the patented Multi-Chamber Inflatable Rescue boards, bases and buoys and an excellent collection of TEC hard use rescue boards,” noted Reuter.

“Starting a Rescue Division makes great sense,” added Fox. “ Steve and I have the background and it is a very logical extension for Boardworks. We have unique inflatable boards, and pads and a good line of TEC molded epoxy boards. Steve’s experience makes this all a natural. Slater Trout Signs with Boardworks as Elite Team Rider

Encinitas CA ( January 25, 2011) Boardworks announced today that 17 year old SUP phenom, Slater Trout, has signed on to join the Boardworks Elite Team for 2012. “We are so stoked to have Slater join our team. He is such an amazing athlete and ambassador for the sport and a great friend of the Boardworks family as well. With the new Slater Trout Infinity SUP models we are introducing for 2012, having Slater on the team makes perfect sense. We look forward to a fantastic year. We are also in the beginning phases of creating a Slater Trout paddle line – stay tuned,” commented Boardworks owner Mike Fox. “It’s a great feeling to be part of the Boardworks family, I’m looking forward to the future. Go Andre!!!! We love Andre from SUP Connect and want to send him a huge congrats for winning the Orange Bowl 12’6 Open Division in Miami (on a Morrelli & Melvin 12’6) we also want to give him big props for being a SUP Super Hero! He has so much energy and enthusiasm does so much for the sport. If you haven’t checked out SUP Connect you should. It is Andre’s creation and a wealth of SUP info and happenings.Here is his report on his win:

“I just won the open sup race at the Orange Bowl in Miami in the 12’6″ division overall over the weekend!!!!
As you all know, my focus has been more on surfing and not racing, so that was quite a surprise, but especially considering some hot shots I was up against from FL and Puerto Rico
plus I had been sleep deprived for nearly a month, had to sleep on the side of the road for a few hours as i drove from Surf Expo to Miami
and had only a couple hours of sleep before the race … I still am not quite sure how I pulled it off but somehow it happened!!!
and I was just eager to share this with my friends.
I attached a pic from the race (I’m taking the outside line in an orange jersey) and one from Surf Expo with me having fun on the indoor pool.”

Record SURF EXPO Crowds Jam The Boardworks Booth

“The January SURF EXPO far exceeded our expectations” noted Ryan Guay, Boardworks National Sales manager. “We have been working hard on presenting the Stand Up Paddle business to retailers in a simpler, more comprehensive way, and it is paying off. Our 6 categories of SUP make sense to retailers, as evidenced by our large prebook business. Fitness, touring and inflatables are where the action is at this show with our SUP surf brands maintaining a strong position. Alot of buzz around the new smaller models- RUSTY Veneers, Infinity, Paddle Surf Hawaii new models and the BW Mini Mod .” We also saw a huge amount of excitement on the Surf Side as well with the Von Sol boards and Sean Mattisons new Nubster fin.

Sean drew a lot of attention at the show this year with his popular Von Sol surfboard line and the new Nubster fin which gained notoriety in 2011 when Kelly Slater used it in consecutive contests. The Von Sol Shadows now come with FCS quads + Nubster. He also introduced his new longboard series, the Von Sol “Jive” 9’0, 9’6 and 10’0.

Infinity SUP in the News

The first arrivals of the new Boardworks Infinity SUP collection were unveiled at EXPO eliciting overwhelmingly positive response. The boards look fantastic and the energy behind the Infinity SUP brand is contagious with Dave Boehne leading the charge. With the release of the new products comes the news that Slater Trout has signed on as an Infinity/Boardworks’ elite athlete for 2012. “We are so excited about the new Infinity line with the 7’5, 7’11 and 8’5 TL Carvers, the 9’4 and 9’10 Carvers and the Slater Trout signature 9’0 and 10’0 models. Of course having Slater as a team rider on the circuit is awesome!”

Mini Mods make the Florida scene:

Phillip Rainey’s secret SUP project, the MINI MOD series debuted at EXPO. Thinned out boards with a unique tail design and cool graphics, the Mini Mods are sure to be popular ranging in sizes 7’10 to 9’6 and retailing at under $1050. We have been surfing the prototypes for over a year now and love them. We felt there was a niche here that we could fill. These boards are perfect for performance surfing and those looking for a smaller cruising board.

Inflatables Blow UP!

EXPO marked the introduction of the new Boardworks Badfish MCIT Inflatable. “Game changer” said Boardwork’s Phillip Rainey. “We began development of this project at Outdoor Retailer. In the short time since, we have extensively tested the product in some challenging waterways, and have come away with some amazing reports. There simply is no other inflatable that offers this kind of stability and performance. The reception here at EXPO has been killer. We have had great reviews from the outdoor centers, inter-mountain retailers and many coastal SUP accounts. It’s a great addition to our product assortment.” Initially designed for rivers, we are discovering that people are interested in this board for many uses. There is a lot of interest in this board for fishing and exploring the many inland waterways where you would prefer not to fall in. We feel it will compliment anyone’s board assortment, as the go-to family board…i.e. it is so stable anyone can paddle it.

“What’s Your Move?” Contest Results in! Noah and Dino tie!

SUP Connect’s Andre Niemeyer was on hand to announce the final results of the Boardworks “What’s Your Move?” SUP contest to a huge crowd at Expo. Because Standup Paddle is such a new sport and people are coming up with all kinds of cool, innovative moves, we thought it would be really fun to create a venue for people to share what they are doing so that everyone can be entertained and inspired to get out and have fun. The contest was launched on the Boardworks Facebook page drawing great response with amazing video submissions and over 1000 new fans in just the first few weeks. The winners of the contest were Mike Harvey in 3^rd place with the “River 360”, 2^nd place went to Kai Lenny with the “SUP Duck Dive”. A tie was called for first place with Noah Yap’s “Rock and Roll Shuvit” and Dino Tassara’s “Backside 360”. A huge thanks goes out to all who participated! Boardworks Opens New Warehouse

“Our objective is 100% on time fulfillment of all orders” said Boardworks Bob Rief. “We realized a year ago that the old business model of purchasing production after selling was simply done. In August of 2011 we began the purchasing cycle for 2012. We have a very substantial inventory position now, in fact, 3 times more than what we had available at this time last year. Of course adding inventory meant much more warehouse space. We opened our new expanded facility in Carlsbad in December. We will continue to stock our regional warehouse in Florida as well as our mini facilities in other locations. The mantra is right product, right place, shipped or delivered to retail at the lowest cost.”

After an amazing year of video submissions from creative and talented SUP athletes and enthusiasts, the final results of the Boardworks “What’s Your Move?” contest are announced at Surf Expo. We had a very wide variety of entries including some great flatwater tricks, pool moves, surf wizardry, whitewater shenanagans and even a hula move. A huge thank you goes out to all who sent in videos and shared their talents. It was really great to see what everyone out there is doing. And here it is….

New in 2012 for the Boardworks SUP Division

Boardworks/Badfish MCIT Inflatable– Changing the game in Inflatable SUP technology and performance. The newly released Boardworks/Badfish MCIT is already getting outstanding reviews from the white water community because of its outstanding secondary stability, but this board is not just for rivers. Count on this board to be a perfect choice for touring and recreation, fishing, family paddling and demo fleets.

RAVEN 10’6 -The Raven 12’6 received rave reviews this year and it was a huge honor when our design was chosen for the Mens Journal Gear of the Year award. That being said, we decided to add another Raven to the line – the Raven 10’6- the perfect board for those seeking a smaller touring and fitness/ training SUP. A great choice for women who are looking for a smaller, lighter board or for those who don’t have room for the traditionally larger fitness boards, the Raven 10’6 offers plenty of glide and amazing stability which makes it a pleasure to paddle even in choppy waters.

MINI MOD

The long awaited Mini Mods are finally here. Available in sizes 7’10, 8’5, 8’8, 9’1, and 9’6 these boards are designed to be performance surf SUPs but are also a good choice for smaller paddlers looking for a light-weight recreational paddleboard with ample stability. What makes the Mini Mod unique is that it is thinner than most boards on the market which allows the surfer to easily set the rail in bottom and top turns. The board sits lower in the water which allows for less “bobbing” from rail to rail. It has a wide tail which also adds to the stability. The Mini Mod was designed to excel in playful sized surf much like many of the popular alternative surfboards on the market today.

EPX 10’ and 10’6 - For 2012 we have modified the Boardworks EPX incorporating a sleeker pulled in nose design on the 10”0 and 10’6. The 11’ and 12’reatineed the conventional full nose design. Come check them out at the booth.

What’s Your Move Contest Winners to Be Announced at Surf Expo

Finally the results are in! We will be announcing the winners of the 2011 “What’s Your Move?” contest at Surf Expo at Boardworks Booth #1777 Friday night. It will be a fun celebration. Beer will be pouring starting at 4:30. We will be showing a video presented by SUP Connect highlighting all the finalists from rounds 1,2 and 3. For those who attend the party we will be raffling off a SHUBU inflatable standup paddleboard.

We would like to send out a huge thank you to all who sent in videos for the contest. Standup paddling is such a new sport and people are coming up with all kinds of cool moves. It was really great to see what people out there are doing and how much talent and creativity there is. It was truly inspirational for all. We look forward to seeing what our next 2012 “What’s your Move ?” contest will bring.

Boardworks Announces Expansion in 2012

Encinitas CA (Jan 9, 2012) According to Boardworks’ Bob Rief, “Our sales have been on a very rapid rise as Standup Paddle Boarding has caught on across the US. Our initial efforts were pretty specific to ocean paddling, but over the last 18 months we began to focus on the inland market and adjust our product offering accordingly. We now have a full array of surf, race, whitewater, lake and inflatable products, including boards, paddles and accessories. Sales results in 2011 were record levels and 2012 prebooks are very substantially up.

Our retailer universe has grown, as have their requirements and expectations of us. In response, we have added a major new warehouse here in Encinitas (in addition to our headquarters facility). We have a third warehouse in Florida and mini facilities in other territories. Of course our objective is to get product closer to the market to lower retail shipping costs and speed replenishment.”

To keep up with the servicing demands on the business we are happy to announce some major changes and additions to the team:

Ryan Guay Joins Boardworks s National Sales Manager

Ryan will join Boardworks as National Sales Manager, and will be based in the Encinitas office. Ryan has an extensive outdoor business and whitewater river background having repped for Merrell in the intermountain territory for the last 8 years. Ryan and his wife also operated Mountain Paddle Surf in Boulder Colorado. “We are very happy to welcome Ryan Guay. He brings to us a complete array of talents…repping, retailing, and authentic paddle experience. He will bring all this to bear in managing Boardworks sales,” comments Mike Fox.

Boardworks Announces Jose Gandara as new Customer Service Manager

Boardworks is pleased to let customers, friends, and reps know that Jose Gandara has been promoted to Customer Service Manager at Boardworks, and will assume all the responsibilities starting Jan 2012. Jose is an industry veteran, having repped at wholesale, managed at retail, and worked the international business as a customer service rep. Bob remarked, “Jose has been a great addition to our team. When we surveyed our retailers in our annual “report card” it was very clear that Jose was a problem solver and real customer service rep, one who has “been there and seen that” at retail. We are happy to have him as our company interface with all of our customers.” Jose, and his family Tracy and baby Ella reside in Encintas, Ca.

Monique Dabbs Promoted to Controller

Monique joined Boardworks in May of 2008 as a staff accountant. It would be fair to say that she started with an open book; Boardworks was under Mike Fox’s new ownership, and a new set of books was the first order of business. Since then Monique has provided all the elements of financial infrastructure, and has done so in an environment of very rapid growth. “We are pleased to expand her duties and responsibilities to Controller.”
